How Does the Dukan Diet Work?

Touted as the French version of the Atkins diet and embraced by many famous celebrities, The Dukan Diet was published by nutritionist and medical doctor Pierre Dukan in 2000. The high protein, low-fat, and low carbohydrate diet is promoted as an alternative to low calorie, small meal portions to help people keep their lost weight off for good.

What Makes the Dukan Diet Different?
- No counting. Following the Dukan Diet is pretty simple. You don't have to keep track of carbs, calories, or other nutrients since it's based strictly on food selection.
- Low-fat foods. The Dukan Diet focuses on low-fat protein including non-fat dairy.
- Natural foods. No diet bars, shakes, or pre-packaged foods.
- Unlimited quantities. You are free to eat as much as you like of any of the 100 proteins and vegetables until you feel satisfied.

There are 4 stages in the Dukan Diet.

Stage 1
The first stage is known as the 'attack phase'. This stage is all about consuming protein. An unlimited amount of lean meat, poultry, eggs, sea food, fish and non-fat diary products are allowed'all except cheese. You are required to drink six cups of water as well as take a 20-minute walk every day. One and a half teaspoons of oat bran is part of the daily diet to help you feel full. Phase 1 can last from a day to ten days, depending on the amount of weight loss desired. Most people have to stay on the first phase for 10 days.

Stage 2
The second stage is called the 'Cruise phase'. Vegetables like eggplants and Brussels sprouts are included in the diet; high starch vegetables such as potatoes are forbidden. You have to alternate between protein-only days and protein and vegetable days. In this phase, you have to walk 30 minutes everyday. The phase lasts until you reach your target weight loss.

Stage 3
The third stage, the 'consolidation phase', allows more food variety 'fruits along with two slices of whole grain bread and an ounce and a half of cheese every day is allowed. Two servings of starchy foods like pasta are also allowed each week. You have to maintain having a protein only day, but are allowed two 'celebration meals' each week. A 25-minute walk each day ensures you do not gain any rebound weight.

Stage 4
The fourth and last stage'the 'stabilization phase''is the plan you'll follow indefinitely. During the stabilization phase, you must consume 3 tablespoons of oat bran per day, choose to take the stairs whenever possible, and maintain a pure-protein diet day once per week.
